About Kyoto Spirit

Kyoto Spirit is an independent travel guide dedicated to Kyoto and the escapes you can realistically reach from it — Fushimi Inari and Kinkaku-ji, Gion and the Higashiyama temple slopes, the Arashiyama bamboo grove, the gardens and zen temples, plus day trips to Nara, Osaka, Kobe, Himeji and Uji, and further afield to Hiroshima and Miyajima. Our mission is to plan the trip you actually want, honestly: which temple tickets are genuinely worth booking in advance, how the ICOCA card compares to a bus day-pass, and which "day trip from Kyoto" is a comfortable excursion and which one quietly means an early train and a long return.

Our approach

Every guide, itinerary and recommendation on this site is built on first-hand research. We name real neighbourhoods (Gion, Higashiyama, Arashiyama, Fushimi, Kurama and Kibune, downtown Kyoto around Kawaramachi and Nishiki Market), real food (kaiseki, shojin ryori temple cuisine, yudofu, matcha sweets, saké from Fushimi's breweries), real experiences (the pre-dawn climb through the Fushimi Inari torii gates, the bamboo grove at Arashiyama before the tour buses arrive, a genuine tea ceremony versus a staged one), and we quote real prices in yen. We give honest assessments of tourist traps — the overpriced "geisha experience" photo studios, the tea ceremonies aimed purely at tour groups, the restaurants near the big sights that coast on foot traffic. If something is genuinely not worth it, we say so.
